The NIOMR library was created along side with the Institute establishment in 1975 to cater for the information needs of the Institute and its environment, through the acquisition/provision of relevant materials (Books, Journals, and Reports etc) to the users. It also designs, publish and disseminate the result of the institutes’ research findings through the mechanism of the technical papers and reports.
Presently, the library serves as the information centre for ODINAFRICA Project (Ocean Data and Information Network for Africa) an initiative of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO, with the support of the government of Flanders (Belgium) and also TEEAL ADORA
To source, acquire and make available up-to-date Information materials to support the intellectual and research needs of the Institute, and users generally.
The Library collection has grown from 2,700 vols. Since its inception, in 1975 to about 52.000 vols. presently, the collections are restricted to fisheries, oceanography and Marine related disciplines. These includes :
The library user is restricted to NIOMR Staff. However students, lecturers, stakeholders and public members working or interested in our area of research activities are allowed to use the library on request.
Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research (NIOMR), is a multidisciplinary marine research institute and Nigeria’s prime institute for Marine Sciences.
