Director Of Biological Oceanography
The Department of Biological Oceanography was established in 2007 following the reorganization and restructuring of Research Institutes in NIOMR.
Genetic improvement of capture and culturable living resources in Nigerian marine and brackish waters
The fundamental research objective of NIOMR Biotechnology Department is to understand the genetics, genomes, and traits of aquatic organisms.
The Department will always conduct molecular genetics research to understand the genetic variation of domesticated and captured fish species and attempt to clone the various important genes from fish species that may be useful to attain the much-desired food security.
The department has 2 Sections and eight Units as follows:
Acquisition of data on spatiotemporal distributions of Physico-chemical parameters and biological characteristics of Nigeria’s marine/coastal waters for:
Establishment of the sources, distribution and biological effects of inorganic and organic pollutants; pathogenic microbes and industrial effluents. The data pool generated useful in:
Establishment of a toxicity ranking for common toxicants in the Nigerian coastal waters and susceptibility ranking of some marine/brackish water animals to intoxication by the identified toxicants.
Establishment of physiological responses marine organisms to organic and inorganic xenobiotics (e.g. Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Heavy Metals) in environmental monitoring
Such information are invaluable for environmental management especially in:
Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research (NIOMR), is a multidisciplinary marine research institute and Nigeria’s prime institute for Marine Sciences.
