Overview

The department is charged with responsibility to conduct research into development of brackish / marine water aquaculture and genetic improvement of fish species

The department has five sections

  1. Fin/shell fish breeding
  2. Fin/shell fish culture system
  3. Fin/shell fish diseases and health
  4. Aquaculture engineering
  5. Biotechnology

Current Research Projects

  • Mass production of all male tilapia Guineensis and Oreochromis niloticus
  • Research on growth, reproduction, and nutritional requirement of marine tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon
  • Induced breeding and nutritional requirement of silver catfish chrysichthys nigrodigitatus
  • Research on growth, reproduction, and nutritional requirement of Atlantic tarpon tarpon Atlanticus
  • Improved culture techniques for the production of mangrove oyster Crassostrea sp in Buguma station
  • Research on growth, reproduction, and nutritional requirement of giant prawn macro brachium vollenhovenii
  • Diagnosis and treatment of common fish diseases
  • Bioassay of anti-biotic in the tissue of farmed catfish, clarias gariepinus, and shrimp p. Monodon
  • Mass culture of micro-algae as live food for shrimp/prawn post larvae production
