Monitoring for Environment and Security in Africa (MESA)
The Monitoring for Environment and Security in Africa (MESA) program was officially launched in NIOMR, a co-applicant institution on 15th January 2015.  The program was presided by the Executive Director/CEO of the Institute, Dr. G. R. Akande.  The program seeks to address the ever increasing challenges from illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing activities in West Africa, through the use of Earth Observation (EO) data and services.
The benefits to be derived from this program is to
  • ensure the high abundance and rich biodiversity of fishery resources in the region which provide numerous economic and societal benefits.
  • support African policy makers in carrying out national, regional and continental policies towards sustainable development in order to carry out socio-economic progress towards achievement of millennium development goals.
